What is ART?

Active Release Technique is a patented, hands-on manual therapy that is designed to quickly alleviate problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with ART. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles.

ART Addresses Overuse Injuries

What is an Overuse Injury?

Overuse injuries occur when a part of the body is subjected to repetitive stress or strain over time without adequate rest or recovery, leading to inflammation, pain, and dysfunction.  Unlike acute injuries, which happen suddenly due to a specific event, overuse injuries develop gradually and can affect muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and bones. Common examples include tendinitis, stress fractures, and bursitis, often seen in athletes and individuals who engage in repetitive activities, such as running, swimming, or typing.

What to Expect During an ART Treatment

ART is much more specific than a massage and more gentle than commonly performed trigger point therapies.  The doctor will evaluate texture, tightness and movement of individual muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements.

ART's protocols span more than 500 moves - with each being very specific and unique to the specific treatment. These moves allow providers to identify problems for each individual patient. ART is far from a cookie-cutter treatment that feels the same every time.
